The story follows a young couple, Jim and Kat, who are separated during a normal morning in Taipei. A long-ignored virus, known as the , suddenly mutates, causing those infected to lose all moral inhibitions. Unlike traditional mindless zombies, the infected in The Sadness are hyper-violent, sentient sadists who take pleasure in committing the most depraved acts imaginable.
