Framed as a multi-media meditation on power’s twilight, the work uses nocturnal imagery, insomnia, and musical nocturne structures to explore the solitude of sovereign authority. Through close reading of visual and textual motifs, I argue that the “Final Empress Work” transforms the traditional nocturne from a romantic night piece into a political elegy for a ruler who outlives her own relevance.
