The narrative follows two second-generation Non-Resident Indians in London. Simran (Kajol) is the daughter of a conservative patriarch, Chaudhary Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri), who has promised her hand to his friend's son in Punjab. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) is a wealthy, carefree playboy. They meet during a month-long trip across Europe. Initially, they clash, but eventually fall in love. Unlike previous Bollywood films where the lovers would typically elope, DDLJ subverts the trope: Raj refuses to run away with Simran, insisting he will win over her father and take the bride honorably ("dulhania le jayenge").
