The first challenge of subtitling Bhooter Bhabishyat lies in its dialogue. The film’s screenwriter and director, Anik Dutta, along with dialogue writer Padmanabha Dasgupta, crafted a linguistic mosaic. The ghosts come from different eras of Bengal’s history: there is the genteel, early 20th-century bhadralok (gentleman) who speaks in a pristine, prosaic, and slightly archaic Bengali. There is the 1970s Naxalite ghost, whose speech is peppered with revolutionary rhetoric and street-smart slang.
